Sustainable Yoga Mat

I’ve been thinking about healthier coping mechanisms to deal with stress, so naturally I thought about yoga. Practicing yoga holds a special place in my heart. As an athlete, yoga was incorporated into my life early on to help with flexibility. As I got older, I turned to yoga again as a form of strength and conditioning to meet the athletic demands at the collegiate level. Every time I needed help realigning myself, I turned to the only constant that kept me balanced through the years… yoga.

As much as I love practicing yoga it also comes with its challenges. You sweat in places you didn’t know your body could or you get stuck in pretzel like positions while no one is watching. So, you can imagine I’ve gone through a few yoga mats in my life.

In the past I to was unaware my yoga mat may have been harmful. While practicing yoga we are touching an undisclosed amount of chemicals. I feel like its time we start vetting our yoga mat purchases.

HOW DID I GET HERE?

My first yoga mat was inexpensive and was only meant to get me started for class. Eventually, I became more interested in how the yoga mats were being made. It only seems that a few people are discussing the health concerns associated with the materials used in yoga mats, but why is this? Yoga mats have evolved, and the previous generation were made from plastic (PVC) and Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). Some mats ripped easily, were slippery, hard to clean, and some were heavy.

Here are the type of questions I now ask as a conscious consumer:

  • How are yoga mats made?

  • How and where are the materials sourced?

  • How did you bond these materials together?

  • What kind of dyes are you using?

  • What kind of working conditions are your employee’s exposed to?

  • Is the community and the wildlife positively effected by my purchase?

*Sometimes these questions might be overwhelming to think about and even harder to ask companies, but that’s what I’m here for.

SCORIA

Let me introduce you to Scoria!

Yara Kamal is the Founder and CEO of Scoria, a company that responsibly sources cork from Portugal to create biodegradable, eco- friendly yoga mats and accessories! Scoria is based out of Toronto Canada and was originally crowd funded on Kickstarter. I have evolved like other consumers, from wanting the latest new trendy thing, to finding companies with the same core values making positive environmental impacts. This is why I would recommend a company like Scoria with it’s sustainable and ethical practices.

Scoria yoga mats come in a variety of beautiful designs that will make any yoga space more tranquil. Each yoga mat is made from cork and finished with a natural rubber bottom. The designs are made from non-toxic watercolors, so the bold images might vary from conventional mats. Cork is anti-microbial, so your mat won’t need regular cleaning. Wipe with a cloth using soap and warm water to clean when needed.
